Russians greet people differently depending on how well they know them. ты (ty) means "you" when speaking to one close friend, family member, or child. вы (vy) means "you" when speaking to a stranger, an elder, someone in a position of authority, or to more than one person at once. привет (privet) is "hi", used with people you would call ты. здравствуйте (zdravstvuyte) is "hello", used with people you would call вы.

Which word means "hi" in Russian, the kind you would say to a close friend or family member?
