Learn the everyday Turkish words for hello, goodbye, please, and thank you. Written for English speakers just starting out, with simple pronunciation guidance for the Turkish letters that look tricky.
Turkish greetings are simple, but a few letters look tricky to English speakers. Merhaba (mer-ha-BAH) means hello. Lütfen (LEWT-fen) means please. Teşekkür ederim (teh-shek-kewr eh-deh-rim) means thank you - the letter ş sounds like the 'sh' in 'shoe'. Evet means yes, and Hayır (ha-YUHR) means no; the dotless ı sounds like the 'a' in 'sofa', not like a regular i. Hoşça kal is said by the person leaving, and Güle güle is said by the person staying - both mean goodbye.
