For decades, astronomers have noticed that galaxies spin faster than the visible stars and gas inside them should allow — the visible matter alone does not have enough gravity to hold a fast-spinning galaxy together. To explain this, scientists concluded that galaxies must contain a large amount of extra mass that gives off no light at all. They named this invisible mass 'dark matter.' It does not glow, reflect, or block light the way ordinary matter does, so it can only be detected through its gravity or, potentially, through rare collisions inside detectors built for exactly that purpose.
